Selfie

Imagine Mona Lisa today.
Posing from place to place.

And the man, Leonardo, dragged hostage.
Pinned to a monopod.

First, she pretends, as if, not looking at him.
Then flirts a bit. Flirts a bit.

For the final touch she wears a kissy face.
It's 'selfish' time! Leonardo winks.

No doubt. There's a secret affair.

  1. haha...nice play on the thought that they could have been more than painter and subject...would a selfie have gotten as much attention? or just been yet another instragram pic...or a facebook pic to look back on only occassionally? would it have been as special to him as well?

    selfish time...ha...i like...

  2. Ah, this poem is a delight, Kelvin. I like the way you imagined Mona Lisa today.. And yes Claudia's painting does make her look a bit flirtatious. Who knows what went on between them! I am sure her flirtatious lips are forever sealed.

  3. Kelvin, This was quite intriguing. Imagining what might have transpired in a moment of artistry. The longevity of the art speaks for itself as we are left wondering if more was behind the brush stroke.

  4. I love ' "selfish" time'. And indeed the whole concept.
And yes, Claudia's painting can be seen as giving her a 'kissy face'.

  5. I like the modern approach to Mona Lisa ~ No doubt there was something going, maybe a secret affair or just "selfie" time ~

  6. Process notes: The whole concept here only circles to the term "Selfie" & the demonstration of how it is generally done by random people. Mona Lisa here represents every girl figure in this digital generation, while Leonardo is used as metaphor for camera phones as hinted in the line 'Pinned to a monopod', & 'Leonardo winks.' should give you an image of a camera flash.

I guess, I have gone a bit abstract here. Anyway, thank you for reading.

  7. This is both very good and amusing, Kelvin. Only today I saw a photo with a group of people taking pictures with their selfie sticks. I enjoyed your modern take on Mona Lisa.

  8. Hahaha--turnabout is fair play and it always manages to expose the sexism in the case or the worm in the library.

  10. Yes I think you are right.. That kissy face has to be a flirt between the painter and the model..

  14. It's "selfish" time. Ha. It must take a little self absorption to take a lot of selfies. It's like having a flirtatious affair with oneself. Nice how you wrote the story to give your commentary.

  15. Just imagine how much that 'smile' had invoked lots of good reasons to admire and be contented with people in general. One can feel that MLisa is such a natural person able to entice millions of lonely souls with a captivating smile. You've brought it out most wonderfully Kelvin!
